Free Credit Reporting

As a result of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act, now you can get a free copy of your Credit Report.

Under the Act, the three major credit reporting agencies – Equifax,TransUnion and Experian – are required to provide consumers, upon request, a free copy of their credit report once every 12 months.

You should take advantage of this opportunity. Your Credit Report not only determines whether you can borrow money for future purchases, but also what interest rate you’ll pay. Generally, the higher your rating, the lower your risk to the lender ... and the lower the interest rate you’ll pay. More often than not, your Credit Report from the major credit reporting agencies will contain mistakes, loans that you didn’t make, etc. Most of the time, these are clerical mistakes. But increasingly, crooks are stealing account numbers and charging purchases to the accounts of strangers.

Checking your Credit Report could help catch any mistakes before they negatively affect your credit. The sooner you catch them, the less damage there is.

Once you have the report, you need to look for charges and accounts you don’t recognize. Follow the agency’s instructions to correct the mistakes.
